CoxHealth Pharmacy Internship Program

Overview

The CoxHealth Pharmacy Internship Program offers pharmacy students structured operational and clinical training that builds progressively throughout their academic years. The program provides patient-facing experiences in hospital and health system pharmacy practice, designed to complement formal didactic education.

Interns begin by developing proficiency in centralized and decentralized pharmacy operations. As they advance, they are trained to obtain and document medication histories. By their third year, and after successful completion of required competencies, interns are equipped to independently provide patient education on disease states and medications. The program fosters increasing autonomy as interns grow in knowledge and skill.

Application Process

Open positions are annually in May/June. Applicants who will start their first year of pharmacy school in the fall are encouraged to apply.

Job Requirements

Requirements include:

• Must be entering into, or already enrolled in, an ACPE accredited school/college of pharmacy.
   
• Must be currently licensed as a pharmacy technician or pharmacy intern with the Board of Pharmacy in the state of Missouri at time of application.
   

Longitudinal Internship: A Continuous, Year-Long Commitment

Hour Requirements

Interns work every third weekend and complete 2–4 hour weekday shifts, with scheduling designed to accommodate academic responsibilities. Additional hours are available during summer and winter breaks for those interested in gaining more experience.

Longitudinal Learning Opportunities

Presentation Skills: During the summer, interns can participate in case or journal club presentations to build confidence and communication skills in preparation for APPE rotations.

Research Experience: Interns have the opportunity to assist with resident research projects, gaining hands-on experience in data collection and analysis. Those interested in pursuing independent research may receive mentorship to develop and lead their own project.

Leapfrog Audits: Interns contribute to quality improvement and accreditation efforts by conducting medication reconciliation audits as part of our Leapfrog initiatives.

Chief Intern Role: Interns may apply for the Chief Intern position, which offers leadership development through responsibilities in scheduling, meetings, and planning intern-related activities.
