Learn how to become a Child Life Specialist
Being in the hospital is difficult at any age, but it’s especially trying for kids.
However, youngsters at CoxHealth have some special people who help make the experience better. Those individuals are Child Life Specialists – and on March 25, they’re holding a half-day class for anyone who is interested in learning about the profession. Entitled Child Life 101, the course is designed to explain more about the department’s role, and how someone can become a certified specialist.
“By assisting children and their families in understanding hospitalization, diagnoses and procedures, Child Life helps to empower children in the healthcare environment,” says Rana Post, Child Life coordinator at CoxHealth. “As we look towards the future and the ever-evolving needs of pediatric patients and their families, Child Life will continue to be an essential part of the health care experience by providing for children’s psychosocial needs and facilitating play during hospitalization.”
During the event, attendees will learn how play helps young patients, about techniques such as education and distraction, and what a typical day looks like for Child Life specialists at CoxHealth. Focus will also be placed on what education and background someone should pursue who is interested in working in Child Life. The session is open to anyone high-school age and above.
Registration is $30, and benefits Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals at CoxHealth. The deadline to register is March 22. For more information or to register, call 417-730-7134.
