Why Do I Need a Colonoscopy?

Getting a colonoscopy is one of the best ways to protect yourself from colon cancer, which is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the United States. During the screening, doctors can find and remove small growths, called polyps, before they turn into something more serious. Most adults should start regular screenings at age 45. It’s a simple step that can give you peace of mind and help safeguard your health for the future.

Our Approach to Colonoscopies

When you choose CoxHealth for your colonoscopy, you can expect care that combines advanced technology with experienced doctors and a focus on your comfort and convenience.

Advanced screening tools: We use high-definition cameras that give a clearer view of your colon. With help from artificial intelligence, our team can spot precancerous growths that are often hard to see.

Minimally invasive treatment: If surgery is needed, we offer options such as robotic surgery and transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEMS). These techniques help remove large polyps or early-stage tumors without traditional open surgery.

Trusted experience: Your colonoscopy will be done by a gastroenterologist or surgeon. Our team performs thousands of these screenings every year.

Easy scheduling: If you’re 45 or older, in good health, and don’t have unusual digestive symptoms, you may qualify to schedule your colonoscopy without an office visit. Instead, we’ll review your health history with you over the phone and give you instructions. The only time you’ll need to come in is on the day of your procedure.

What to Expect With a Colonoscopy

To prepare for a colonoscopy, your doctor will ask you to avoid food and certain drinks for one to two days before the procedure. The day before, you’ll take a bowel prep medicine that clears stool from your colon. This usually involves drinking a laxative solution that causes frequent, watery bowel movements. Clearing the colon helps your doctor see the lining more clearly.

On the day of your procedure, you’ll receive IV sedation to help you stay comfortable. The doctor will then insert a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera and light through the rectum. This scope allows your doctor to examine the inside of your colon on a video screen.

The procedure itself usually takes about 30 minutes, but you should plan to be at the hospital or surgery center for at least two hours to allow time for prep, the exam, and recovery.

If polyps or small tissue samples need to be removed, your doctor can do that during the screening. These samples are sent to a lab, and most patients receive their results within a week.

Benefits of Colonoscopies

A colonoscopy is the most effective way to prevent colon cancer. During the screening, doctors can find and remove precancerous polyps before they have the chance to turn into cancer.

While there are other ways to screen for colon cancer, a colonoscopy lets your doctor check the entire colon and remove any polyps during the same procedure.
