Ozarks Hunting Season Reminder: The Four Gun Safety Rules That Save Lives
As hunting season begins in the Ozarks, CoxHealth reminds all gun owners to review the four universal rules of gun safety. Stay safe this November with these essential firearm safety tips.

The Four Gun Safety Rules That Save Lives
As deer season opens across southwest Missouri, from the ridges near Branson to the woods of Mark Twain National Forest, many Ozarks families are heading outdoors to take part in a time-honored tradition. A few extra moments spent reviewing gun safety — handling, storage, and shooting practices — can make every hunting trip safer for you and those around you.
1. Treat every gun as if it’s loaded
Always assume that a firearm is loaded, even if you believe it isn’t. This mindset prevents careless mistakes and keeps everyone safe. Before handling a gun, open the action and check the chamber to confirm it’s unloaded. Never rely on someone else’s word — always verify for yourself.
2. Never point the muzzle at anything you don’t intend to shoot
The safest direction depends on where you are — at home, on the range, or in the woods. Always be aware of where your muzzle is pointing and ensure it’s aimed in a safe direction. Accidental discharges can happen in an instant, and muzzle control is your first line of defense.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot
Rest your finger along the frame, not on the trigger, until your sights are on target and you’ve made the decision to fire. This simple habit helps prevent unintentional discharges caused by sudden movement, slips, or startle reactions.
4. Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it
Identify your target clearly before pulling the trigger and be aware of what’s behind and around it. Bullets can travel a long distance, and missing your target could put others in danger. This is especially critical for hunters — always confirm you have a safe backstop and that no one is in your line of fire.
