Understanding Workplace Violence

Workplace violence consists of physically and psychologically damaging actions that occur in the workplace or while on duty. This includes a wide range of behaviors such as bullying, incivility, and more severe forms of violence.

Types of workplace violence

  • Bullying: Repeated, unwanted harmful actions intended to humiliate, offend, undermine, degrade, harm, and cause distress to the recipient.
  • Incivility: Rude and discourteous actions, gossiping, spreading rumors, and refusing to assist a coworker. If left unchecked, incivility can lead to more severe forms of workplace violence.
  • Physical and verbal attacks: Biting, spitting, punching, pushing, pinching, shoving, scratching, hitting, kicking, choking, stabbing, name-calling, threatening, intimidating, harassing, verbal attacks, yelling, hostile remarks, gossip, taunting, and withholding of support.
