Spending time online can help you connect with friends and family, but it's important you know how to surf the web safely.

Create a safe screen name. A good screen name won't reveal much about how old you are, where you live, or your gender.

Personal information like your school, street address, phone number, and family financial information–like bank account or credit card numbers – is private and should stay private.

Stay away from Internet strangers. If you don't know who they are, don't talk with them online, and never meet them face-to-face.

Once you post information online, you can't take it back. Don't post any comments or pictures that could hurt someone's feelings. Even if you later delete the information, it never completely disappears online.

Tell your parents, or a trusted adult, if an online message or image makes you feel uncomfortable or scared.
