We needed to learn a healthier lifestyle.
Our journey with Cardiac Kids began when my daughter, Karyme, participated in the fifth grade-screening program at school. It included screening for BMI, prediabetes, high blood pressure, triglycerides, HDL, LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol.
Her results were not the best.
Karyme was identified as at-risk and we decided to stay with the program and see what we could learn. We went to a three-session, after-school program where they focused on healthy food preparation, portion control, heart healthy foods and decreasing fat and sugar consumption.
Karyme called physical activity the fun part of class.
I noticed she was more aware of what we ate and was working hard on staying physically active after school. After the program ended, we joined Committed to Kids that summer and we love it. We have gone to it since and have learned so much. We look at nutritional labels when doing our groceries and we try to stay as active as we can.
We are definitely more aware of the food choices that we make.
Having other family members join the program really motivated us. We challenge each other to do 10,000 steps per day and we exercise together all the time. Together, we have learned the basic principles of healthy nutrition and eating behaviors. Committed to Kids helped us change to a healthier lifestyle we like and that makes us feel better about ourselves. We are still working on some weight loss goals and we’re committed to reaching them.
