COVID-19 update

We saw a slight reduction in daily cases this week at our hospitals. Admissions remained between 120-130. Symptomatic positivity rates remained high near 30%.

Our teams made several important accomplishments this week. The new medical-surgical unit on the third floor of the Cox South West Tower was completed. The unit provides 36 privates beds that can transition to 72 beds if needed, and will be used for convalescing COVID patients. We will begin to move patients into the unit next week. We began the first CT scans with our new dedicated CT inside the COVID ICU unit. We implemented rapid antigen testing at all CoxHealth urgent cares with a 30-minute turnaround time. Our employee COVID vaccination plan was announced. We will receive 7,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from the state in a few weeks.

CoxHealth expands at-home care for COVID-19 patients

In an effort to increase capacity for COVID-19 patients at CoxHealth’s hospitals, the system is expanding its abilities to care for patients at home. The changes will allow the hospitals to care for patients who are convalescing for COVID-19, and other issues that can be appropriately treated in the home setting.

$1.9 million EDA grant to transform Cox College simulation lab

As a part of CARES Act funding, the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration (EDA), has awarded Cox College funding to benefit future health care heroes. A $1.9 million grant, secured by the CoxHealth Foundation, will transform the college’s simulation laboratory.

Cox South re-certified as DNV Comprehensive Stroke Center

Cox South underwent a comprehensive virtual stroke survey this week. The surveyors complimented our stroke team for their innovation and results. The Stroke Center was re-certified as a DNV Comprehensive Stroke Center for another three years.
