Be careful! Prevent falls

Preventing falls is important for people of all ages, inside and outside the home.

“Falls can result in injuries, minor or serious, such as sprains, strains and broken bones,” says Jami Blackwell, registered nurse and trauma services manager.

General tips to prevent falls at home include removing clutter on floors, having good lighting in all rooms, wiping up spills right away and not walking on wet floors. Another way to prevent falls is getting regular exercise to improve balance, coordination and strength. Also, review medicines with your health care provider, because some medicines can make you drowsy or lightheaded, increasing your risk of falling.

“It is important to have a plan for getting help in an emergency,” says Blackwell. “Have emergency numbers located next to each home telephone or programmed in your phone.”
