Know the Warning Signs of Stroke

Cox Medical Center South is a Level 1 Stroke Center.

A stroke is a brain attack that cuts off vital blood and oxygen to the brain. Emergency treatment can help stop brain damage and disability – if you know the warning signs and act FAST.

If you feel weak or tingly in your FACE, weak or
numb in your ARM or your SPEECH becomes
slurred, TIME is of the essence. Call 911.

Are you at risk for stroke?

The longer you wait, the more extensive the damage to your brain will be. If given within three hours of the first symptom, there is an FDA-approved clot-buster medication, called tPA, that may reduce long-term disability for the most common type of stroke.

In the state of Missouri, emergency medical services are required to transport acute stroke patients to a designated stroke center, such as CoxHealth, rather than the closest facility.

The team at CoxHealth Stroke Center sets the standard for emergency intervention, earning CoxHealth the prestigious Gold Plus Award from the American Heart and Stroke Associations. The AHA and ASA also named the center to its Target: Stroke Honor Roll list for consistently treating tPA-eligible stroke patients in 60 minutes or less from the time they arrive at the hospital. CoxHealth is the only health system in our area, to receive this honor.

CoxHealth is also designated by Neurosource© as a Neuroscience Center of Excellence, and is number 1 in the market for medical excellence in stroke care according to CareChex.
