Feb. 9, 2010
The Cox Family Medicine Residency program has earned a full five-year accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), following a recent review of the program.
The accreditation process takes approximately 6-8 months and involves extensive documentation on program faculty, residents, schedules, rotations, curriculum, procedure documentation and patient care skills. The process concludes with a site visit by a Residency Review Committee representative, who is a physician with extensive experience in academic medicine.
Accreditation by the ACGME is based on established standards and guidelines. The ACGME is a private professional organization responsible for ensuring the quality of the more than 8,700 residency and fellowship programs in 130 specialty and subspecialty areas of medicine in the United States. The Cox Family Medicine Residency was established in 1987 with the mission to prepare residents for full-scope family medicine. Cox FMR is the only residency program in the Springfield area, and accepts eight residents each year for a total of 24 residents in the three year training program.
