CoxHealth launches new ePrescribing system
A new electronic prescription system is giving CoxHealth physicians and specialists at Ferrell-Duncan Clinic the ability to increase the safety, accuracy and convenience of prescription processing.
Called ePrescribing, this system is a partnership between CoxHealth, Kryptic and the SureScripts Pharmacy Network that allows physicians to securely submit prescriptions electronically to retail and mail order pharmacies nationwide. In addition, with ePrescribing pharmacies can also communicate back with physicians - reducing paperwork and multiple phone calls between offices.
The system went live Sept. 10 to more than 270 CoxHealth providers.
According to Dr. Louis Krenn, who helped pilot the system at Cox Health Center Willard, many patients reported with ePrescribing they received their prescriptions faster and that the entire process of filling a prescription was more convenient.
"Patients like it that the prescription is sent off before they even leave the exam room and they don't have to keep track of a written paper order until they are able get to a pharmacy," says Dr. Krenn. "Medications are filled seamlessly, saving both the physician and the patient more time."
"In a single step we have improved the quality and security of prescribing medications and virtually eliminated paper," says CoxHealth Chief Information Officer Bruce Robison.
"This is a significant advancement for patients, physicians and pharmacies," Robison adds.
Other benefits of ePrescribing include increased office efficiency, increased formulary compliance, improved patient care and costs, and a reduction in errors caused by illegible writing and inadvertent drug reactions. More than 95 percent of all pharmacies in the U.S. are certified to connect to the system.
