Cardiac Rehab

Cardiac rehabilitation is designed for patients with coronary artery disease or with an identified high risk for developing cardiac disease.

This includes persons who:

  • are recovering from a heart attack
  • are recovering from heart surgery
  • are a recent recipient of a stent, angioplasty or heart transplant.
  • Proven benefits in individuals who have participated in cardiac rehabilitation include:
  • 26% reduction in death from coronary heart disease
  • 21% fewer nonfatal heart attacks
  • 13% fewer bypass surgeries
  • 19% fewer angioplasties

A CoxHealth patient works on cardiac rehabThe cardiac rehab team at Wheeler Heart and Vascular Center consists of nurses trained in cardiac care, dietitians, pharmacists, exercise specialists, psychologists and respiratory therapists. These healthcare professionals work in conjunction with your referring physician.

The initial visit to cardiac rehab will take about an hour and a half. Baseline testing and measurements will be taken at this time. Please wear comfortable loose clothing and walking shoes.

Together with the cardiac rehab team, you will discuss your individual needs, and develop a plan designed to improve your cardiac health. We encourage family members to attend any of the sessions and provide support throughout the program.

Exercise sessions are conducted three times per week and are designed to increase cardiac strength and endurance. You will be supervised and closely monitored by our team of professionals.

Exercise fundamentals benefits:

  • correct methods for muscle conditioning
  • improved cardiac function
  • lowered heart oxygen requirements
  • slowing the progression of plaque buildup
  • observation of your response to activity, medication and other therapies.
  • control of weight, blood pressure, and blood fat levels

It is important to understand the cardiac disease process. The education you receive will help you take control of your cardiac risk factors, and maintain a heart healthy lifestyle.

Education sessions include:

  • understanding heart disease
  • how to exercise safely
  • benefits of life-long exercise
  • risk factors for developing coronary artery disease and how to control them
  • how to identify and manage stress in everyday life
  • medications you take
  • how to recognize symptoms to report to your physician
  • good eating habits, including specific diet instructions when necessary
  • smoking cessation
  • how to manage daily activities
  • understanding and managing cholesterol and other blood fats

Cardiac Rehabilitation is located on the third floor of the Wheeler Heart and Vascular Center, 3800 S. National Ave. in Springfield. You may enter either the front or back doors (adjoining the parking area); then take the elevator to the third floor.

Pulmonary Rehab

Pulmonary Rehab is designed for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other chronic lung conditions.

Benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation:

  • decreased symptoms
  • improved quality of life
  • increased exercise tolerance
  • greater independence
  • decreased use of medical resources.

The pulmonary rehab team consists of respiratory therapists trained in pulmonary care, dietitians, pharmacists, exercise specialists, psychologists and nurses. These health care professionals work in conjunction with your referring physician.

For some patients the program begins with an introductory session during hospitalization. Others may be referred to the Wheeler Heart and Vascular Center by a physician. The initial visit to pulmonary rehab will take an hour and a half. Baseline testing and measurements will be taken. Please wear comfortable loose clothing and walking shoes. Together with the pulmonary rehab team, we will discuss your individual needs, and develop a plan to improve your pulmonary health.

We encourage family members to attend any session and provide support.

Medicare and most insurance companies provide coverage for pulmonary rehabilitation. During registration you will  be asked for your insurance information. If you are unsure about coverage from you insurance company,  we recommend you check with your insurance company
